The book
Catholics and Orthodox Christians share much of the same ancient faith, including belief in Christ’s presence in the Eucharist. Yet they do not receive Communion together. That separation can seem like a matter for historians and theologians. For Chris Taylor, it became personal through a close Orthodox friend.
The Divided Eucharist follows the questions that friendship opened: how the churches came apart, how each understands papal primacy and the authority of councils, the Filioque, purgatory, and Marian doctrine, and why attempts at reunion have not held. Memoir-driven and grounded in history and theology, the book gives sustained attention to Orthodox history, worship, theology, and self-understanding.
